Ornithocenoses are species of large birds belonging to the clade Apodiformes, the most diversified group of birds, the diapsids (two-legged and four-legged vertebrates).

The Ornithocenoses include only the fossil bird Rhynchostomellusciconnector, a primitive bird, and the extant passerines. This bird, which appeared in the Oligocene (33–23 Ma), was the closest relative of the ancestor of the birds (Aves) that came to dominate the Mesozoic world.

This term is a reference to the “Mosaic of Life” theory, that is, the idea that all the living things on the earth today are derived from the same ancestor and share a common genetic history. According to this theory, birds are descended from a common ancestral species (which is still unknown), and birds and pterosaurs are their close relatives. The word “ornithocenosis” was invented in 1967 by the paleontologist Philip J. Currie as a special kind of ornithological term to refer to a particular kind of large bird family.

Ornithocenoses generally lived in Europe and western Asia. Their fossils have been found in the same strata as those of pterosaurs. Therefore, ornithocenoses and pterosaurs were the closest animal relatives of the birds, and many researchers believe that the four-winged protobirds and storks were very similar to pterosaurs.
