Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has initiated efforts to use NSF’s Seismic Research Accelerator (SRA) to get seismic sensors of very high quality and low cost on and below the surface for global recording purposes.
The SRA plans to procure multiple seismic sensor locations in the continents of Africa, Asia, Europe and South America. The ability to use numerous sensor locations enables the generation of much more detailed 3-D high-resolution images of Earth’s subsurface.
The SRA plans to record all vibrational signals in the ocean as well as some surface signals. To date, NSF has funded one SRA to be placed in the subtropical western Pacific Ocean, where seismometers will be placed at depths of 2000-3000 meters.
For the other four continents, the SRA will collect ambient seismic data in both the ocean and land. This seismic data will be transmitted to the NSF data archive for subsequent processing.
Los Alamos National Laboratory is pleased to be able to participate in this exciting NSF project, and we look forward to working with NSF and the other agencies to make seismic recordings worldwide.
