What Sails the Raft of Life?

One of the most frequently asked questions after someone has experienced a severe accident is: “Why me?”

We know that people are frequently involved in accidents, and ask the question because they don’t want to believe that this is what happened to them – that this was truly their time to die – or that they are deserving of their fate.

We know that people regularly ask these questions. They ask them when a doctor informs them that their recovery will be a long, difficult process. They ask them when a loved one is dying. They ask them when they are told that they have a large open wound that should be healing properly, or that they are receiving ongoing treatment, or even that they have seen the inside of a hospital emergency department. They ask them when a cancer diagnosis has been delivered.

And they ask them of their own trauma, the horrific accidents that leave them disabled or otherwise unable to live a normal life. They ask them when they have been told that they are dying.

They ask them because asking the question is important to them, and they will not believe the answer. What they cannot accept is that they, in fact, did not deserve to survive, and they do not want to believe that things could ever go so badly wrong with them that this fate is inevitable.

The problem is that they are correct to ask the question. Many times, the answer is – because that is the way the universe works. It is what is…

The Universe is essentially random. But it is also resilient and powerful – with a purpose. Randomness is necessary in order for resilience and powerfulness to be possible. If the universe worked exactly the same way for everyone, we would have no resilience and no power.

They do not want to believe that the universe can be cruel, and not really fair, and that things happen to them for reasons. This, they do not like to contemplate. But, they are absolutely right to ask, and they absolutely do ask.

They ask
